Hunters Hut/Mt. Ellis

A three day wander into the Red Hills of Mt. Richmond Forest Park. With murky weather forecast we settled on a sedate trip entering from Inwood's lookout and walking in to Hunters Hut on Friday. Walking up Mt. Ellis and back in misty drizzle on Saturday and then back out to Inwoods on Sunday morning. Hunter's Hut is a stunning little 8 bunker standard DOC hut with a good firebox and plenty of firewood nearby. An overnighter from Inwood's lookout would make a very pleasant weekend however the descent off the Gordon Range into the Motueka Left Branch valley is steep and often slippery, not great for young trampers. I must return in better weather to fully explore the Red Hills range proper.
