Tour Aotearoa - Part 2 -South
Arriving in the South Island, my cycling legs itching to get going, so I hopped onto the Linkwater Track. This is a recently opened grade 3 MTB and walking track connecting Anakiwa and Picton. At first I was ecstatic to hit the fast flowing track through beautiful Kanuka forest but I quickly began to feel the steep short climbs which although no trouble on a mountain bike was tiring when fully loaded with camping gear. I tried the road for a while and was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was the road a much more pleasant gradient, with little traffic, but it also had better views of the stunning beaches and bays. The track would be great to return to for a relaxed mtb ride one day when I don't have so much gear on board. After spending the night on board a friend's boat in Havelock I made a 5am dash along the 20kms to Pelorus, trying to get over the highway section which is heavily used by trucks even at these early hours. Pelorus bridge made a convenient breakfast spot with many sandflies for company
